What Happens When We Do a Dental Cleaning?

Many of our patients wonder why it is so important to have us clean their teeth when they do a fine job themselves. The teeth look and feel clean and they floss regularly. What our patients don’t realize is that we do not simply “brush” your teeth with a fancy tool and good tasting toothpaste.

We do far more than that when we do a cleaning, some of which falls under the inspection category rather than the cleaning category. Let us explain.

What All Do We Do?

First, cleaning is usually performed by our dental hygienist. These are highly trained professionals who went to school specifically to get a degree in this field. The first thing our hygienist does is look in your mouth with a small mirror. This mirror can help them detect problems you can’t see by looking in a mirror. They are the first line of defense against gum disease. If no gum disease is detected, we then move to tartar removal.

Though you brush your teeth well you can’t get into all of the areas that can have plaque buildup, particularly in between your teeth. If plaque is not removed, it turns into tartar. These will then result in tooth decay. Our hygienist and a specialized mirror locate these areas and use a scraping tool to remove the plaque and tartar. Like they say on tv, don’t try this at home. If you are not trained you can damage the enamel on your teeth. When you brush and floss, you prevent plaque buildup, but once it becomes tartar, we must remove it.

Next, your teeth are cleaned with a brush that has more power than your electric toothbrush. It removes any remaining plaque and tartar. The brush has a special toothpaste that is a bit gritty which is why deep cleaning is only done twice a year. Next, our hygienist will floss your teeth and then give you a liquid fluoride solution with which to rinse your mouth. Give us a call for your cleaning as it is important for your oral health.
