What Is Sleep Apnea?

Do you know what happens when we snore? First of all, it happens to a very large part of the population. In fact, it is such a common thing that most people are very familiar with snoring or know someone that does.

Snoring happens in our sleep, and it is just the sound that is made through breathing in our airways. Most people think that it is caused by nasal sounds. However, it actually happens behind the tongue at the back of our airways. The sound is made from our pharynx becoming constricted while we sleep. The back of the throat has soft tissue, which relaxes when we are in a deep sleep. When the tissue vibrates, it causes the snoring sound.

Sleep apnea, on the other hand, can make you experience symptoms such as pauses in breathing while you are asleep, or loud gasps that sound like you are trying to get some air. During the night, your breathing may pause dozens of times, and your brain can lose oxygen. This can be quite serious and needs to be looked at by your dentist.

Snoring is not only disruptive, but it can also be a symptom of a more severe problem. Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous condition that affects thousands of Americans each year. At Weekend Dentistry, we offer snoring and sleep apnea treatment to help our patients get a restful night’s sleep.

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

Our dentists at Weekend Dentistry can help you treat snoring and sleep apnea with the use of a special custom made mouth guard. Although there are a variety of over-the-counter appliances available, they can become a bit uncomfortable to wear as they are not custom-made.

When you schedule your appointment for sleep apnea treatment, our dentist will create an impression of your teeth to create the mouthpiece. Once the mold is created, the mouthpiece can now be designed to fit your mouth nicely. The mouthpieces are made out of soft material that will stabilize the tongue, adjust the lower mandible to go forward relative to the upper jaw. This allows the airways to open up to make breathing easier and decrease snoring.
